For convenience, there’s a linkage under the sink attached to the lift rod. You pull up on the lift rod and the linkage pulls down the plug. After this step it is time to place your top drain assembly through the drain hole in your sink.

A pop up assembly is nothing more than a bathroom sink drain plug. Tighten any connections that leak. In this case, you would not use plumbers putty.

You’ll note one of them is much too loose, but the other one fits just right. Tighten the nut on the underside until the gasket begins to spread and the drain assembly is snug in the sink. Pop up drain with overflow included.
